The Apple iPhone 5 will face a new challenger once the Samsung Galaxy S 4 gets introduced on Thursday. Each phone is the flagship model of its respective platform, but a blog post from Imagination lets us in on a little secret: both the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S 4 will have a PowerVR GPU crunching the graphics on each mobile phone.
Imagination said in its blog that the Samsung Galaxy S 4 would have the PowerVR SGX544 inside, paired with the Samsung Exynos 5410 Octa. Samsung uses the ARM produced Mali on the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S III, which is powered with the quad-core Samsung Exynos 4412. The U.S. carrier version of the mobile phone features the Adreno 225 together with the dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960.
Meanwhile, the Apple iPhone 5 features the PowerVR SGX543 which is very similar to the PowerVR SGX544 on the Samsung Galaxy S 4. The only difference is that the SGX544 supports Microsoft's DirectX 9.3. Samsung plans on running the GPU at a faster clock speed and will use the same triple-core set up as used on the Apple iPhone.
So guys, perhaps we can use this knowledge that both the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S 4 both use a PowerVR GPU to just get a little closer. In the words of the late Rodney King, "Can we all get along?"
