Most rumours point towards a handset that will look similar to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus devices that launched earlier this year, but how else might they differ? Here is the Galaxy Note 8 against the Galaxy S8 and S8+, based on the speculation.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs Galaxy S8 vs S8+: Design
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is rumoured to follow a similar design path to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ but with a couple of tweaks. Being a Note device, the design will need to cater for a built-in S Pen so it is thought the Note 8 will have a slightly wider stance in comparison to the S8 and S8+, with the S Pen slotting in next to USB Type-C port at the botton of the device.
An all-screen front like the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is rumoured for the Note 8 too with super slim bezels and dual edges, along with a removed home button. Despite previous rumours of a fingerprint sensor built into the display, it is now thought the Note 8 will have the sensor next to the camera on the rear of the device like the S8 and S8+ and it is also thought the metal and glass waterproof sandwich design will continue.
The Galaxy S8 measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm and weighs 155g, while the S8+ measures 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1mm and weighs 173g. It is expected that the Galaxy Note 8 will have closer measurements to the S8+ than the S8, though slightly larger to accommodate the fractionally larger display that is rumoured.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs Galaxy S8 vs S8+: Display
The Samsung Galaxy Note series is known for a big display so its no surprise that the Note 8 is expected to continue that trend. It is reported the new device will offer a 6.3-inch screen but with the 18.5:9 aspect ratio like the Galaxy S8 and S8+, meaning only a slight change in its body dimensions compared to the Note 7.
The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch display, while the S8+ has a 6.2-inch display, meaning the Note 8 will be slightly bigger than the current plus-size Samsung flagship. Both the S8 and S8+ have Super AMOLED panels with Mobile HDR Premium compatibility, all of which the Note 8 is also expected to offer.
In terms of resolution, the S8 and S8+ have Quad HD+, putting their pixel counts at 2960 x 1440 for a pixel density of 570ppi and 529ppi, respectively. The Galaxy Note 8 is rumoured to increase its resolution to 4K, which would result in a pixel density of 699ppi, making it sharper and better equipped for VR than its S8 and S8+ brothers.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs Galaxy S8 vs S8+: Camera
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is rumoured to be coming with dual rear cameras, as we mentioned above. Based on the leaked images, it is thought the rear cameras will be situated in a horizontal alignment with a 12-megapixel sensor and a 13-megapixel telephoto sensor on board.
According to the rumours, the Note 8 will have dual optical stabilisation and three times optical zoom. It is also expected Samsung will use the same multi-frame image processing technology that it introduced on the S8 and S8+. Nothing has been leaked about the Note 8's front snapper as yet though we'd expect no less than the same as the S8 and S8+, including iris scanning capabilities.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ both have the same camera functionality, featuring a 12-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, optical image stabilisation and a f/1.7 aperture with eight times digital zoom. The front-facing camera has an 8-megapixel sensor with autofocus and the same f/1.7 aperture.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs Galaxy S8 vs S8+: Hardware
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will no doubt come with the latest hardware, either Qualcomm or Exynos, which at the moment would be the Snapdragon 835 system or the Exynos 8895. It is also thought Samsung might up the RAM to 6GB and there have been rumours of a 64GB storage model and a 128GB model, both of which are thought to come with microSD.
Battery capacity has yet to be detailed in leaks for the Note 8, but as the Note 7 and the Galaxy S8+ both offer 3500mAh, it wouldn't be too surprising to see the same in the new device.
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ both have either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform or the Exynos 8895, depending on the region, coupled with 4GB of RAM, which would mean the Note 8 would have a similar performance to these two devices unless it increases its RAM or a new processor launches before the Note does.
The S8 and S8+ both have 64GB of internal storage with microSD support for storage expansion. Battery capacity of the S8 is 3000mAh, which is a little smaller than the S8+ and what is predicted for the Note 8. It's also thought Samsung may tune the Note 8 speakers in association with AKG so the Note 8 could see improvements in audio over the S8 and S8+.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs Galaxy S8 vs S8+: Price
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has yet to have an official price put on its head, though it is rumoured that it will be Samsung's most expensive smartphone to date. Some claims suggest we can expect to see it hit shelves for €999, which is around £870.
The Galaxy S8 costs £689 and the S8+ costs £779, which if Note 8 rumours are true, would see the new device go for around £100 more than the S8+.
